WATCH: New Pakistani Law Says Persons Found Guilty of “Honour Killings” will Serve at Least 25 Years Behind Bars

Pakistan’s parliament has passed a law that increases penalties for people found guilty of so-called ‘honour killings’.

The landmark bill passed on Thursday guarantees mandatory prison sentences of 25 years and strips families of the right to legally pardon the perpetrators.

More than 1,000 Pakistani women were murdered in such killings last year.

Because such crimes are usually carried out with the agreement of entire families, murderers are often released under Islamic “blood money” laws that rights activists have campaigned against for decades.

Daughters and sisters have been murdered for allegedly bringing shame on their families in various ways. Some have been killed for daring to marry a man of their choosing. Earlier this year, another lady was killed for helping a couple elope.

This law comes three months after a social media star and “modern day feminist”, Qandeel Baloch, was killed by her brother for “dishonoring” the family.
