Wanuri Kahiu, a filmmaker and writer from Kenya, in a TED Talk she gave back in April 2017 talked about telling all kinds of stories about Africa.

In what she terms “AfroBubbleGum Art,” she describes art that’s for the sake of art, for beauty, for fun.

Not that art as an agenda isn’t important, but it can’t be the only type of art coming out of Africa, she said.

So while the single story keeps pushing an Africa that’s all about war and poverty and AIDS, Waniru wants African art that’s robust, touches all kinds of topics, and features well-fed Africans who are having fun.
