How They Met
I had seen his picture on a poster a year before actually meeting him in person but my first encounter with Ola was at church. I had left my Bible in my car so he offered to share his with me. Through the years we were friends but it took forever for us to realize that we were made for each other. Once we did, there was no turning back and we have been inseparable ever since.
The Proposal
The proposal took place on the 19th of July 2012. I knew he was going to propose one day but I was sooo sure that it was not going to be that day. It was in a very intimate setting. He had a candlelight dinner with a waiter set up just for me at his “uncle’s house” (that was the decoy…). He had all my favourite songs playing in the background. It was so perfect but I was still clueless. When it was time for dessert, I was about to dig in when I noticed that he was on his knee. I honestly cannot remember anything he said. But I do recall crying and saying YES!!! Just when I thought that the celebration was over, we decided to head out the door. As soon as I opened the door, everyone was there screaming Congratulations!!! As I ran back inside to get myself together, my friend Ronke jumped out of the pantry! She was there recording the entire time. That was the highlight of the day….after getting my bling of course 😉 My ring is perfect. He had it custom made as well. He also had it engraved with the message: “Genesis 2:18-24 ~Lanre’s rib”. I could not have asked for anything more suitable. I love my ring!
Wedding Prep & Theme
The theme for our wedding was “Once Upon a Dream”. It just fits us perfectly. Our being together was truly a dream come true and we just wanted everyone in the room to feel the love. We did have a few challenges here and there but thanks to God, we made it through. We initially wanted an outdoor ceremony around a fountain but due to the venue not being ready for our big day, we decided to move it to the Hyatt North and it turned out to be perfect. Thanks to Keisha of Keisha’s Creations and Shade of a Conceal Affair, we incorporated the idea by bringing the outdoor inside, hence the ceremony with the bride and groom surrounded by friends and family in a circle of love. It was beautiful. We also had to realize that our wedding day was not just about us. Being the perfectionist that I am, I had to learn to be flexible with requests from family members and loved ones.
Wedding Style
For my big day, I wanted to be “Very Romantic” but still “Edgy” hence why I got the hairpiece. I wanted to feel like a Queen rather than a princess. I just wanted to be different and push the envelope. For my hair and makeup, I simply told Lyzadora to bring the ‘drama’ and boy, did she do her thing! My wedding dress was made by Casablanca Couture with additional customizing done by Parvani Vida bridal in Houston, TX. Funny story about the dress! I could not fit into it while trying on dresses so my younger sister had to wear it and yes, she is 3 dress sizes smaller but I just knew that was the dress once I saw it on her! My advise for brides would be to enjoy the experience and go with just few people that way, you don’t get confused by too many opinions. Unlike most brides, I only went to 2 Bridal Boutiques, only tried on about 8 dresses and had just 3 ladies with me. It also helps to know how to balance knowing what you want and keeping an open mind ’cause your dream dress might not be the right fit.
